Theodore Roosevelt raised his rifle and fired, to which the great bear turned and let out a roar from hell. His eyes pierced the dim light, and like a bullet he charged straight for TR. With his mouth open and white fangs gleaming, the burin came on, rushing and bounding through the sagebrush with unimaginable ferocity.
It was the autumn of 1889 near Red Rock Pass in Idaho, where TR was about to have his one and only near-death encounter with a grizzly.
