Description

When Astrid Bergman Sucksdorff came to India as photographer for a film expedition, she expected to be using a camera more often than a rifle. But in the nearby jungle tigers were attacking villagers and cattle. The author, an expert markswoman, was drawn both by compassion for her gentle neighbors and by a spirit of adventure to stalk these tigers on her own. Accompanied only by a guide, who would leave her overnight on a small platform ten to twenty feet up in a tree, she kept silent watch, hour after hour, until the huge, sinister creatures would pad without warning out of the brush. In her suspenseful narrative, and in her breathtaking photographs, Astrid Bergman Sucksdorff captures the tingling excitement of the hunt and the sense of tragedy when this most beautiful of all living creatures is killed.

Unlike most big-game hunters, Astrid Bergman Sucksdorff is deeply involved and interested in the life around her. Village life in the mountains and jungles of central India, the joyous freedom of adolescent boys and girls in the ghotul, or youth house, and the sounds, smells and violence of the jungle at night add a rich background to her thrilling story.
