Fully bound in maroon suede, spine & upper board titled in gilt. This is the fascinating autobiography of Robert de Pole from Krakow who ended up in Africa entirely by accident. His family were deported to Siberia by the Soviets from where they escaped to South Africa via Iran and Aden, before being sent to a refugee camp on the Rhodesian copper belt. After the war, they had a farm at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, until they were dispossessed by the Tanzanian government in the 1960's. In between times, de Pole pursued a career as a professional hunter, pursuing elephants and all the major quarry species of the region. An exciting and fast moving book which concentrates on the first couple of decades of East African independence and the struggle for existence of formerly secure European settlers.
