Description

God’s Children, by Archibald Rutledge. Indianapolis and NY: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1947. 160 pages. Illustrated with a number of wonderful photos by Noble Bretzman. Hardbound and stated first edition.

Another copy, this one the special version of the first edition, the limited “Hampton Edition,” signed by Rutledge on the inserted page noting this edition. Also signed and inscribed on the front inside “Inscribed for dear Grace with the love and admiration of her devoted Cousin arch, March 12, 1962” along with a second inscription “For Grace, my precious twin—with all of my love, Eleanor, Hampton Plantation, 12t of March, 1962.” Eleanor was the second wife (and at this point the widow) of Arch, Jr. She was in effect the mistress of Hampton Plantation for the latter part of Rutledge’s life. This copy is in rough shape in a number of ways—cover stains, binding shaken, edges of the suite of photos at the end foxed, one photo loose, etc. Remnants of the dust jacket are tipped in. While a problematic copy condition-wise, the signatures and association still make it a one-of-a-kind item. $100.
