Old Plantation Days, by Archibald Rutledge. Cumberland, MD: The Eddy Press, no date (probably 1912 or 1913). Hardbound buckram and boards. 160 pages. Title notwithstanding, this is a quite different book from the item above. It has 18 stories as compared to the previous listing’s 28 chapters, and five of those in this book do not appear in the above volume. If you want fuller details, they can be found in Jim Casada’s Introduction to a series of chapbooks offering the pieces missing from the later publication. This work was likely printed, quite possibly with intentions of most copies going to family and friends as Christmas gifts, in a very small edition. My guess, but it is only a guess, is 500 copies or less. The book is very rare and copies are listed for as high as $3000 through Internet sources. This is a near good copy. Internally it is clean but the corners are bumped, the cover has some stains, and the front and rear hinges are beginning to crack. Still, a chance to obtain a really rare Rutledge item at a reasonable price. $650.
