A Tear for Somali and its companion volume, Another Tear for Africa, by Douglas Tatham Collins, are two volumes that chronicle the author's experiences in East Africa during the mid-20th century. These works offer a blend of adventure, cultural insight, and personal reflection, making them notable additions to the genre of African hunting literature.
Douglas Tatham Collins, a British-born soldier, administrative officer, and professional hunter, began his African journey at the age of 22 when he was drafted into the Somali Gendarmerie. His first book, A Tear for Somalia, details his adventures in northern Africa starting in 1941. The second volume, Another Tear for Africa, continues his narrative, covering nearly thirty years of his life in Africa.
Both volumes are illustrated with full-page drawings: A Tear for Somalia features 16 illustrations by Italian artist Bruno Di Sopra, while Another Tear for Africa includes artwork by American artist Bob Kuhn.
