Description

Deep River: The Complete Poems of Archibald Rutledge. Columbia, SC: R. L. Bryan Company, 1960. Harddbound. Xxiv, 635 pages. Frontispiece of Rutledge on porch at Hampton. Inscribed on frot endpaper: “Eleanor Stevenson Rutledge-to whom I owe more than love can repay, from her ever devoted Dad. December 25, 1960” Eleanor was the second wife of Rutledge’s oldest son, Arch, Jr., and she looked after Hampton and oversaw operations there for many years while Rutledge was sort of trapped with his second wife in Spartanburg (she did not like Hampton and its lack of amenities). He was truly devoted to her. The book is also signed on the title page. A unique and special association item. A typed sheet giving background information is tipped in and a small newspaper clipping is taped to the back endpaper. The book is generally in good condition, with a hint of foxing in a place or two, a small white splotch at the bottom of the front cover, and staining from the newspaper clipping on the back endpaper.$400.
